Seasonal Weather Preparedness for Pets in New Jersey

In New Jersey, the changing seasons bring both beauty and challenges, including snowy winters and hot, humid summers. While families prepare their homes and routines around the weather, pets often rely on us to keep them safe. Happy Paws House Calls believes seasonal preparedness is just as important for pets as it is for people. With some planning, you can increase the chances that your animal companion will stay safe and healthy no matter what Mother Nature brings.

Spring and Fall: Flooding and Storms

Melting snow and heavy rain can cause localized flooding in New Jersey, especially in low-lying areas. Be prepared for your pet to deal with wet weather.

  • If you are in a high-risk flood area, keep a to-go kit ready in case your home is water damaged and you need to leave. Include pet food, bottled water, a collapsible bowl, medications, a carrier and/or leash, pet first aid supplies, and comfort items.
  • Avoid floodwaters. Never allow pets to walk through standing water (if possible), as it may contain bacteria or sharp debris.
  • Prepare a safe space indoors. Have a designated area where pets can stay during thunderstorms to reduce stress.

Summer: Heatwaves and Humidity

New Jersey summers can be hot and sticky, and pets are highly vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.

  • Never leave pets in cars. Temperatures can rise to dangerous levels within minutes.
  • Provide constant fresh water. Dehydration is a major risk during heatwaves.
  • Exercise wisely. Walk pets in the early morning or evening when it’s cooler.
  • Watch for heatstroke. Symptoms include heavy panting, drooling, and collapse. Seek emergency veterinary care right away if your pet has heatstroke symptoms.

Winter: Snowstorms and Freezing Temperatures

Cold weather poses serious risks for pets, especially during snowstorms when roads are closed, and power may be lost.

  • Limit time outdoors for cats and dogs with thin coats.
  • Protect paws. Ice, salt, and chemicals can irritate paw pads. Booties or paw balm help.
  • Prepare for power outages. Keep extra blankets and safe heat sources ready to keep pets warm.
  • Stock supplies. Have at least 3–5 days of pet food, water, and medications on hand in case you’re snowed in.

Preparedness Tips for Pet Owners All Year

No matter the season, some steps always apply. Keep up with veterinary care. Vaccines, parasite prevention, and annual exams verify that your pet is healthy enough to handle emergencies. Updated microchips and ID tags improve the chance of reunion if you’re separated during a crisis. If your pet isn’t already microchipped, talk to your veterinarian about having this quick procedure performed during the next vet visit.

I just want to say that Dr.Mini is by far the Most compassionate, caring, attention to detail Vet that I have ever had the pleasure to deal with. Unfortunately, the circumstances that required me to reach out to her were not pleasurable as we had to put my dog down. She managed her schedule to come same day so our dog didn’t have to suffer and she did everything in her power to make a sad situation bearable. I HIGHLY recommend Happy Paws to anyone who wants a vet that genuinely treats your pet like it is part of your family.
