Vaccines and Titers

As a pet parent, you want your dog or cat to enjoy as many happy, healthy years by your side as possible. One of the best ways to do this is by ensuring they receive the appropriate vaccinations. At Happy Paws House Calls, we believe that vaccinations are not one-size-fits-all. While Rabies vaccinations are required by law, protocols for additional vaccines should be tailored to each individual patient to provide the highest level of protection with the lowest level of risk.

We provide in-home vaccines and titers in Morristown, Jersey City, Bridgewater, Oakland, Woodbridge, and the surrounding areas and would be more than happy to come up with a vaccination protocol that is appropriate for your pet.

The Right Vaccine at the Right Time

We want to keep your pet healthy, but we recognize that not every pet needs every available vaccine. Some vaccinations – like Rabies – are required by law. In addition, certain core vaccines are recommended for most pets. These include parvovirus and distemper for puppies and feline distemper, herpes virus, and calicivirus for kittens. Many others are optional and recommended based on an individual pet’s age, lifestyle, health status, risk of exposure, and other factors.

Titers for a Precisely Tailored Program

In the last 25 years or so, routine annual vaccinations have become common practice. Experts are now finding that pets can have long-lasting immunity to common diseases after their initial puppy or kitten vaccinations. At Happy Paws House Calls, we use vaccine titers to determine whether your pet needs revaccination. These blood tests measure the level of antibody immunity to a particular disease and can help us avoid over-vaccinating your pet. The diseases we titer most commonly include Rabies, canine distemper and parvovirus, and feline distemper and calicivirus.

Vaccine titers are particularly important for pets who have chronic health problems, such as cancer or autoimmune disease. While vaccinations are lifesaving, they are strong substances that can produce severe reaching in compromised pets. Over-vaccination has been linked to many major health issues in pets, such as auto-immune diseases and cancer. We will work with you to help you determine what’s right for your pet.

We will review your pet’s health record to determine their most recent vaccination and/or titer dates. Then, depending on your pet’s age, health, and other factors, we will recommend blood tests to check the titer levels for specific diseases where immunity may be low. A small amount of blood will be drawn from your pet then sent to the lab for testing. Once we receive the results, we’ll let you know if your pet needs a booster vaccine.

I just want to say that Dr.Mini is by far the Most compassionate, caring, attention to detail Vet that I have ever had the pleasure to deal with. Unfortunately, the circumstances that required me to reach out to her were not pleasurable as we had to put my dog down. She managed her schedule to come same day so our dog didn’t have to suffer and she did everything in her power to make a sad situation bearable. I HIGHLY recommend Happy Paws to anyone who wants a vet that genuinely treats your pet like it is part of your family.
