Planning to bring your pet along for holiday travel? When you’re driving up the coast or flying across the country, traveling with your furry companion can be a breeze if you’re prepared. Happy Paws House Calls guides pet owners in the Morristown, NJ area as they navigate every step of the travel process, including at-home exams for domestic or international health certificates. Our mobile service makes it easier than ever to get travel-ready without a stressful clinic visit.

Is Holiday Travel Right for Your Pet?

Before booking flights or mapping out a road trip, take a moment to think about how your cat or dog handles new environments, car rides, or busy airports. Not all pets enjoy the bustle of travel or do well in new places. Some may be more comfortable staying home with a trusted sitter or boarding facility. And that’s okay! Sometimes, leaving your pet behind when you go on a holiday trip can be the best choice for them.

Tips for Holiday Travel When You’re Bringing a Pet

Schedule a Pre-Travel Veterinary Visit at Home

One of the biggest advantages of working with Happy Paws House Calls is the convenience of in-home exams. We will assess your pet’s health, update any needed vaccines, and fill out the paperwork needed to send to the USDA for a certificate of veterinary inspection (health certificate) that meets airline or international travel requirements.

Pro Tip: Some countries require health documentation that needs to start weeks or even months in advance. Check the USDA website to see your destination’s requirements, and don’t wait until the last minute to schedule your appointment!

Know the Rules for Airlines

Every airline has different rules for cats and dogs, including size restrictions, carrier specifications, and documentation requirements. Check their website to see what information is available or call their customer service line before booking a ticket.

Pack the Pet Care Essentials

Pets need their own travel kit, which should include:

  • Food and water (plus bowls)
  • Any medications with instructions
  • A familiar blanket or toy for comfort
  • Waste bags, litter supplies, and cleaning items
  • Travel crate or carrier that meets airline or safety standards
  • Leash and collar with updated ID tags
  • Vaccine records
  • Phone number for an emergency vet hospital at your destination

Update Identification

Microchipping your pet is one of the most effective ways to reunite if they get lost during your travels. Combine that with a secure collar and ID tag with your current contact info.

Keep Your Pet Comfortable During the Trip

For road trips, plan regular stops for bathroom breaks and stretching. Never leave your pet alone in a vehicle, even with the heat or AC on.

For air travel, make sure your pet is accustomed to their crate ahead of time. Use familiar bedding and avoid feeding them for several hours before takeoff to reduce motion sickness (speak with your vet about food timing).

I just want to say that Dr.Mini is by far the Most compassionate, caring, attention to detail Vet that I have ever had the pleasure to deal with. Unfortunately, the circumstances that required me to reach out to her were not pleasurable as we had to put my dog down. She managed her schedule to come same day so our dog didn’t have to suffer and she did everything in her power to make a sad situation bearable. I HIGHLY recommend Happy Paws to anyone who wants a vet that genuinely treats your pet like it is part of your family.
